“The poet laureate of pessimism”, “the grocer of despair”, “the godfather of gloom” and “the prince of bummers” – to name just a few labels Leonard Cohen, an artist of many faces, has been given through the years. We are looking forward to exploring, analyzing, delving into those labels and then diving underneath them during the International Undergraduate and Graduate academic conference organized by Jagiellonian University in Krakow American Studies Students' Academic Society on October 24, 2014.

Born in Montreal in 1934, Cohen showed a great passion for words from an early age, writing and performing his poems, studying music and literature, and publishing his first book of poetry – “Let Us Compare Mythologies” ­– in 1956. Being already an acclaimed author, he published his first novel “The Favourite Game” in 1963, followed by “Flowers for Hitler” next year, and “Beautiful Losers” hailed as “the most revolting book ever written in Canada” in 1966.

Simultaneously, to his literary career, Cohen developed his skills as a songwriter, getting involved in New York’s music scene. His first album “The Songs of Leonard Cohen” was released in 1968, starting a long road of successful and critically acclaimed musical adventures through many musical styles, from acoustic folk to electro-pop. Forty five years later Leonard Cohen’s music still gains worldwide attention, with his twelfth and latest album “Old Ideas” topping the charts in eleven countries, including Canada and Poland.

Both his music and writing have had a tremendous cultural impact, but Cohen is, first and foremost, a talented writer and therein lies the key to his ongoing successes as a musician. The artist described as “part wolf and part angel” fascinates many and his legacy cannot, and should not go unnoticed among those interested in North-American culture. Therefore, we – American Studies Students' Academic Society in collaboration with Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora of the Jagiellonian University – invite you to participate in the conference focusing on Leonard Cohen’s life and work. We are hoping to see those in a new light and from a new perspective. We are looking for critical and in-depth analysis and an original approach to the topic.

All interested in the conference, please send your abstracts to festiwalkulturykanadyjskiej@gmail.com along with your short biographical note (university affiliation, your past conferences, publications, fields of research, personal interests). The deadline for submissions is September 20, 2014. Both abstracts and presentations will be accepted in English only. We will contact the authors of presentations accepted no later than October 1. The planned length of the presentations must not exceed 15 minutes. The conference fee for the presenters is 25EURO/100PLN, which must be paid by the accepted speakers no later than October 10. Further details for the speakers will be sent via e-mail.

Przedłużenie terminu nadsyłania abstraktów do 31 października

Zważywszy na liczne i usilne prośby, postanowiliśmy przedłużyć okres, w którym można nadsyłać zgłoszenia na studencko-doktorancką konferencję naukową "Arktyka", która odbędzie się w ramach Festiwalu Kultury Kanadyjskiej 21 oraz 22 listopada.

Abstrakty można przesyłać do 31 października 2013 włącznie, do północy na adres festiwalkulturykanadyjskiej@gmail.com.

Call for Papers w języku polskim i angielskim można znaleźć poniżej. Przypominamy, że zgłoszenie musi zawierać abstrakt wystąpienia związanego z tematem przewodnim konferencji oraz krótką notkę biograficzną. 

Czekamy na zgłoszenia, jednocześnie zaznaczając, że w najbliższej przyszłości opublikowane zostaną pierwsze szczegóły programu Festiwalu.

Studencko-doktorancka konferencja naukowa w ramach Festiwalu Kultury Kanadyjskiej

Arktyka. Na pierwszy rzut oka lód, śnieg, wiatr, zimno i ani jednej żywej duszy w promieniu kilkuset kilometrów. W rzeczywistości obszar ten leży w centrum zainteresowania zarówno polityków, jak i naukowców z całego świata. Problematyka arktyczna jest na tyle istotna, że to właśnie ona będzie tematem przewodnim studencko-doktoranckiej konferencji naukowej w ramach II Festiwalu Kultury Kanadyjskiej.

Powodów tak ogromnego zainteresowania tymi terenami jest wiele. Jednym z nich, bodaj najważniejszym, są znajdujące się tam ogromne zasoby naturalne. Ropa naftowa, gaz ziemny, a nawet złoto, diamenty czy platyna są kuszącą perspektywą nie tylko dla Kanady. Podobną rolę odgrywa tzw. przejście północno-zachodnie, znacząco skracające trasy statków. Kiedy dodamy do tego perspektywę globalnego ocieplenia, za czym idzie większa dostępność wymienionych wcześniej złóż, to pojawia się ciekawa sytuacja geopolityczna. Arktyka staje się obszarem o wartości strategicznej, który już od kilku ostatnich dekad przyciąga uwagę najważniejszych graczy na scenie międzynarodowej i aktualnie staje się dominującym tematem w polityce zainteresowanych państw. Kanada, która w ramach Arktyki posiada takie tereny jak Jukon, Terytoria Północno-Zachodnie oraz Nunavut, ma ogromne znaczenie na rozwój sytuacji. Jednak Arktyka to nie tylko Kanada, to także USA, Rosja, Dania i Norwegia, które również czynnie biorą udział w „wojnie o Arktykę”.

Widząc ogromne zainteresowanie badaczy tą tematyką, postanowiliśmy właśnie jej poświęcić studencko-doktorancką konferencję naukową w ramach drugiej edycji Festiwalu Kultury Kanadyjskiej. Jako organizatorzy, Koło Naukowe Amerykanistyki UJ we współpracy z Instytutem Amerykanistyki i Studiów Polonijnych UJ, chcemy zachęcić do przesyłania abstraktów prezentacji, odnoszących się do problematyki arktycznej. Interesują nas zagadnienia, dotyczące historii, stosunków międzynarodowych, ekonomii, gospodarki, a także kultury, które nawiązują do tematu przewodniego.

Wszystkich zainteresowanych naszą konferencją prosimy o nadsyłanie zgłoszeń, zawierających abstrakt prezentacji (około 250 słów) oraz krótką notkę biograficzną autora na adres festiwalkulturykanadyjskiej@gmail.com najpóźniej do 20 października 2013. Prezentacje mogą być prowadzone zarówno w języku polskim, jak i angielskim. Jednocześnie zaznaczamy, że ich planowana długość nie może przekraczać 15 minut. Każdy prelegent po zatwierdzeniu swojego uczestnictwa w konferencji będzie zobowiązany uiścić opłatę konferencyjną w wysokości 40zł, do 4 listopada włącznie. W planach jest wydanie publikacji pokonferencyjnej.

Student-doctoral conference within Canadian Culture Festival

The Arctic. At first glance, ice, snow, wind, cold, and not a single living soul within a radius of several hundred kilometers. In fact, this area is the field of research of both politicians and scientists from around the world. Arctic issues are so important that organizers decided to make it the main theme of the student-doctoral scientific conference within the second Canadian Cultural Festival.

There are many reasons for such huge interest in this area. One of them, perhaps most important, are natural resources that are located there. Oil, natural gas, and even gold, diamonds and platinum are tempting prospect, not only for Canada. The Northwest Passage also plays a significant role, because of its ability to shorten the route of ships. It appears to be an interesting geopolitical situation, when we add the prospect of global warming and consequently, the greater availability of obtaining natural resources. The Arctic is an area of strategic value, which for the last several decades attracted the attention of major players on the international scene and is currently becoming a dominant topic in the policies of the countries concerned. Canada, which has such areas as the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut within Arctic, has great impact on the development of the situation. However, the Arctic is not only Canada, but also the United States, Russia, Denmark and Norway, which are also actively involved in the "battle for the Arctic."

Seeing the enormous interest of researchers in this subject, we decided that the Arctic will be the main topic of student-doctoral conference within the second edition of the Canadian Cultural Festival. As organizers, American Studies Student Circle of the Jagiellonian University in collaboration with the Jagiellonian University Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, we encourage you to send abstracts presentation issues related to the Arctic. We are interested in the such issues as history, international relations, economics, and culture, all of which has to refer to the main theme.

We encourage everyone who is interested in our conference to send your application, containing abstract of the presentation (about 250 words) and author’s brief biographical note at festiwalkulturykanadyjskiej@gmail.com no later than 20th October 2013. Presentations can be given in both Polish and English and their planned length must not exceed 15 minutes. Each speaker will be required to pay a registration fee of 40 PLN before 4th November. The plan is to release post-conference publication.
